Until the discovery of a neolithic axe in 1.970 (in the village Borostaberria), the oldest news that were known of this municipality went back to the XII century. The foundation of the village dates of 1.346, year in which XI Alfonso grants him/her the Letter Puebla, with the name "Villanueva of San Andrés." This denomination maintained it until half-filled of the XV century in that began to be used that of Eibar.

From the first times of the history of the community, their economy has been eminently rural (cattle raising and forest exploitation mainly). The creation of industrial polygons in the last years of the XX century has given place to the establishment of an outstanding number of companies.
Historically the strategic location of the village has made it participate in the wars that have taken place in these lands. This way in the XIX century it suffered the participation of all them, from that of the independence until the Carlists, in the XX one the front of the civil war stayed ejusto in the municipality until the spring of 1937 suffering the continuous attacks from the valley of Deva and the bombings of the aviation.
