They are diverse the opinions regarding the toponym Durango. Alfonso Irigoien estimates that: it is "clearly of formation altomedieval, time in which was effective as antropónimo in the form Duranco." Other authors consider that it would be a derivation of Urazango and I Joust Gárate it proposes that it would be an evolved form of the name Padurango. In the confirmation of the jurisdiction of the village on the part of the infant don Juan (1372) it denominates it to him Tavira of Durango. Tavira would be the name of the primitive nucleus and Durango was the name of the merindad. Until the XVI century he/she knows it to him as Villanueva (Uribarri) of Durango.
