A registration of tithes of the church, dated in 1483 is the first document that he/she mentions the city. Until the XVII century, the port of Ribeira was of little importance in the region, partly to constants incursions of Viking, sarracenos and pirates of the XI century to the XVIII one. In spite of everything, it grew in a continuous way until transforming into one of the fishing most important ports in Galicia at the end of the XVIII one. In those dates, merchants coming from cataluña settled down in the city and they created a flourishing salting business, of which the current industry canning ribeirense comes. The king XIII Alfonso granted Ribeira the city title in 1906, in recognition of the industrial and commercial great development of his port. http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ribeira |
