Great Canaria is an island of the Archipelago Canary located in the Ocean Atlantic, next to the costs of the north of África and that it belongs to Spain politically. Together with the islands of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura it forms the county of Las Palmas. The capital of the island is Las Palmas of Great Canaria. It occupies a central place geographically in the Archipelago, and it is located between Tenerife and Fuerteventura.Although unanimity doesn't exist among all the historians, many coincide in that the aboriginal name of the island was Tamarán or Tamarant, and that it was divided in the guanartematos of Telde and Gáldar. However, the traditional acceptance of this denomination is being questioned in recent dates, from the moment in that the word Tamarán appears for the first time in the XIX century, not being verified its presence in any classic source neither of the time of the Conquest. It is more probable than Canaria it is the version latinizada of the true name aborigine of the island or of the community that he/she inhabited it.
