Citadel (in Catalan and in an official way Ciutadella of Menorca) is a municipality of the Balearic Islands, in Spain. Located in the end west of the island, it is the second city in inhabitants' of Menorca number and headquarters of the bishopric of the island. He/she governed the capitalidad until the English occupation the year 1714.A the long of the centuries, the different residents have given him/her diverse names: Jamma, Iamo, Iamona, medina Minurka. But it was starting from the 1287, soon after the incorporation of Menorca to the Christian and European culture with Alfonso's conquest III that the current name, toponym was imposed that, etimológicamente, comes from Latin civitatella, civitas (city) diminutive. In spite of that, this name already prevailed among the romanized population and the Mozarabic menorquines previous to the colonization carried out by the Crown of Aragon. At the moment it denominates it to him Ciutadella of Menorca in an official (making a parallelism with the capital of Majorca) way for not confusing it with other toponyms.
