They are uncertain the origins of the city of Vinaròs. Going back to the Iberian town of "Puig."An alquerÃa existed beside the sea, well-known in the XIII century as of those "Beni-Al-Arus." Mentioned this alquerÃa, in the Letter Puebla (29 September of 1241) that became in a Christian town after the conquest of PeñÃscola for the king Jaime I, in 1233, receiving the name of Bynalaroç. In the Half Age it depended on the castle of PeñÃscola, the same as neighboring Benicarló, until he/she became independent and a growth that transformed it into the main capital of the north of the Valencian Community began. In the XVI century he/she met the movement of the Slangs, participating in favor of the Crown, what was worth him/her, the year 1540, the title of Villa. He/she had a port of the most important of Mediterranean, with some big shipyards, where big ships were built. For this port they went aboard those more than 15.000 Moorish expelled of the Kingdom in 1609.Durante centuries, Vinaroz suffered the attacks of the Moorish pirates and, hence, like in the whole Valencian coast, they are towers of surveillance and watchtowers, with the function of warning to the population in the event of danger: it is the case of the one denominated "turret Moorish" dels that is at the moment in ruins popularly. In the XIX Century, it had a local militia for the defense of the city and a wall was built that surrounded it. With the support that was lent to the throne during the Carlist wars, the queen Isabel II, it granted him/her, in 1862, the title of "Very Noble and Loyal Villa." And in the year 1881 received from the king XII Alfonso, the title of City. picture |
