Alcoy (in Valencian, Alcoi) is a Spanish city located in the north of the county of Alicante. It counts with 60.931 inhabitants (I take a census of of the one 2005), being the sixth more populated city of the county. It is capital of the district of Alcoià, of the subcomarca of the Valleys of Alcoy and head of judicial party.The birth of the urban nucleus goes back a year 1256 and it was fruit of the desire of to colonize and to assure the southern frontier of the Kingdom of Valencia, after the Christian conquest taken to term by Jaime I of Aragon. The Arab commander's last revolts Al-Azraq, in the 1276, they were finally subjected (dying the own one Al-Azraq when he/she was sieging Alcoy) and they determined the definitive establishment of the Christian power on the current county of Alicante.
