The monastery was founded in the year 880 by the count Wifredo the Hairy one. Their mission was the one of to repopulate the valleys of the river Ripoll and to enlarge its possessions toward Cerdaña and Ponts. The first consecration of the church took place April 20 888 and he/she decided to dedicate the church to Santa María's invocation.Wifredo left its son Radulfo in charge of the monastery, so that it was raised and educated according to the monastic norms. Radulfo was later years abbot of Ripoll and bishop of Urgel. Soon after, Wifredo made something similar with its daughter Emma for which founded the monastery of San Juan of the Abbesses, near to that of Ripoll. The monastery grew and it prospered quickly. It was consecrated again in the 935, 977 and 1032.Santa María of Ripoll was a cultural important center, partly thanks to her collection of writings. By the middle of the century X the monastery had 66 manuscripts. In the 1008 they were already 121 that transformed in 246 to the abbot's Olive death into the one 1046. Most of these manuscripts were copied and they reproduced in the own monastery in the scriptorium. The most valuable copy in the collection is the acquaintance as the Bible of Ripoll with numerous illustrations and a series of introductory texts that convert it in kind of an encyclopedia of the sacred text. Here it was also written at the end of the XIII century the Geste Comitum Barcinonemsusm that is considered as the first history of Catalonia.
