In the XI century the abbot Oliba founded a small monastery beside Santa María's hermitage that slowly it was consolidating and he/she transformed into abbey at the beginning of the XV century.
Among the years 1493 and 1835, time of deep reformations, of growth and splendor, Montserrat was part of the Congregation of Valladolid. The Napoleonic war (1808 -1811) and the disentailment of 1835 brought the destruction and the abandonment, but soon (1844) the restoration began, only paralyzed by Spanish Guerra Civilian (1936 -1939) that Montserrat converted in the monastery-sanctuary that is today.
